All sessions will be held at the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce.
The programme consists of a 6 month training period leading up to a 10-week overseas expedition, and a few months of post-expedition follow-up and activities. Raleigh fully funds all participants through the generosity of sponsors, which includes the expedition fees, travel expenses, and most of the equipment/kit needed. Participants are required to do some fundraising to demonstrate their appreciation for this opportunity.
• Pre-Expedition Training Period: January – June
During this period, participants will take part in a number of activities to increase their physical fitness, and mental preparation for the expedition, as well as improve on their teamwork. At least two residential camps are held, which will include team-building exercises, trekking, camping, swimming, kayaking, an Adventure Challenge, and an Environmental project. Additionally, during this time, participants will be required to participate in fundraising activities, group fitness sessions including rock-climbing at Olympic Club, and receive a series of travel vaccinations.
• Expedition: July – September
The 2008 overseas programme will be in Costa Rica/Nicaragua. The expedition will consist of three phases – Community, Adventure and Environmental. For an example of the phase projects, see what the Bermudian Raleigh participants did during the 2006 expedition:
Community:
Namibia: Venturers assisted with the building of a two classroom school, a playground and a cultural centre, where the local people can stage performances of traditional music and drama as well as sell locally produced crafts to tourists. The students also spent an hour each day teaching in the local school.
Borneo: Teams of students worked with the village to build a kindergarten, community school and library. They also repaired and installed water systems to enable the village to have clean drinking water throughout the year.
Environmental:
Namibia: Working with REST (Rare Endangered Species Trust), students started the construction of a new aviary for the rare and endangered Cape Griffin vultures. Another team of Venturers completed the building of two game viewing hides, to be used by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) to maintain an effective wildlife management programme.
Borneo: In a remote and largely unexplored area, the students worked to finish a field centre complex, develop the newly sourced trails into the canyon and upgrade existing tracks to a waterfall and jungle camp. Venturers also assisted in the building of a hanging suspension bridge and a satellite base camp, both to aid research scientists with accessing and living in the area.
Adventure:
Namibia: Venturers challenged themselves to complete a demanding 19-day, 250 km trek along the Goantagab and Messum Rivers, collecting data on the desert-dwelling elephant, noting game animals and tracks, mapping and measuring the dimensions of particular plants and carrying out a beach clean-up.
Borneo: Venturers trekked across Crocker Range, upgrading trails along the way, and learning about the rainforest environment. Students also participated in a diving conservation program, gaining their PADI Open Water diving qualification, and assisting with an underwater clean-up operation. Finally, students experienced an exhilarating 24-hr climb to the peak of Mt. Kinabalu, the highest mountain in Southeast Asia.
• Post Expedition: September – December
After the expedition, participants are required to give a community presentation about their experience to Raleigh sponsors, supporters, and their parents and friends. Additionally, they will participate in sponsor presentations and media appearances.
To give back to the community that gave them this opportunity, participants identify a Community Project to work on. (Previous years have worked at Sunshine League and Salvation Army.)
Finally, Raleigh assists participants with working towards their future goals by identifying possible job placements, continuing education programmes, and scholarships.
